Why Single-Sex Public Schools?

Single-sex public education has been a choice in the private sector for generations.  The National Coalition of Single-Sex Public Schools (NCSSPS) believes that the choice to attend a single-sex school should also be available to families in the public system.

In 1996 there were only five single-sex public schools in the United States.  Today there are over 95 single-sex public schools scattered across the country.  Single-sex public schools are having a positive impact on their students and as we increase the number of high quality single-sex schools we will increase the acheivement level of all our schools.

Many parents ask, “Why should I send my child to a single-sex school?”  Well, there are a number of good reasons to send your child to a single-sex school but here is what the researchers say:

Single-sex public schools offer students:

  • Diminished strength of youth culture values
  • Greater degree of order and control
  • More positive same-sex role models
  • Reduction of sex bias in teacher-student interactions
  • Elimination of invidious gender dominance, sexual harassment, and predatory behavior
  • Greater leadership opportunities
  • Greater staff sensitivity to sex differences in learning
  • Parent and student make pro-academic choice

Single-sex schools are not for everyone, but we believe that parents and students in the public sector should have the choice to reap the many benefits that can come from an education free from the social stereotypes and pressures of society.
